The name of the But 'n Ben restaurant conjures up the image of Scotland's famous cartoon family The Broons and their small holiday cottage retreat which is rather apt considering this small terraced cottage was indeed once the holiday home of a Dundee family.
The whitewashed restaurant is situated in the small coastal village of Auchmithie, just a few miles north of Arbroath, where the local delicacy the Smokie originated and a few small boats still operate out of the harbour.
Not surprisingly the menu reflects the village's history and its proximity to the sea with seafood dominating the choice and being the reason why it has become a firm favourite with many.
We chose the Smokie pancake which was a lovely light pancake filled with fresh and tasty Smokie flaked in a rich cream sauce and the haddock coated in oatmeal. Although fresh and full of flavour, the haddock was a touch dry making the big wedge of lemon and tartar and marie rose sauce which accompanied it essential.
The dumpling was very rich, packed full of fruit and delicious served warm and smothered in cream. For the faint hearted their choice of cake can be taken home in a doggie bag, which the staff are more than happy to provide.
(A day out I suggest is a walk at Lunan Bay in the morning, lunch at But 'n Ben's and then an afternoon visit to the House of Dun & Dunnottar Castle.)
